Sailing and Racing Program Volvo 70 Telefonica Black postponed until April 2021

Unfortunately, we have had to make the extremely difficult decision to postpone the sailing and racing program of Volvo 70 Telefonica Black until April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Below you find the full statement of Lance and Claire running Telefonica Black.

Statement Telefonica Black

We have had to make the extremely difficult decision to postpone our sailing and racing program until April 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We have undertaken extensive risk assessments based on our events programme which have to have regard to ever-changing guidelines being issued by governments and authorities where we would be sailing.

Our priority has always been, and will always be your safety. Currently, we are unable to guarantee this because of the inability to socially distance either below deck due to the open layout of the bunks or above deck throughout evolutions.

We are also aware that the insurance companies are no longer covering for any COVID related claims and if the worst was to happen and one of the crew showed symptoms, not only would we be devastated that someone was ill, potentially fatally, but it would also have had huge knock-on effects. The whole boat would have to quarantine for 14 days and this would then incur additional costs, missed flights/accommodation, disruption to yourselves and your families and the rest of the program would also have had to have been postponed causing us wider issues within the sailing community.

The unknowing and uncertainty in these unprecedented times has caused many sleepless nights but it all boils down to the fact that your safety is our biggest priority and with the current situation we wouldn’t be confident in ensuring your wellbeing and the wellbeing of everyone else on board.

We are truly devastated to let you all down and we hope you understand why we have come to this decision. However, we are actively planning the 2021 season to ensure Telefonica Black is ready to compete and deliver a full race programme and experiences.

We love what we do, we want you to love it just as much, and we have poured our heart and our soul into this big boat of ours and we want to ensure that we are here for you next year and for all the future sailors who want to come on this adventure with us.

We love bringing big boat sailing to all of you, words cannot convey how disappointed we are and that the impact of COVID – 19 has been so far-reaching as to affect us all in so many ways.

We are excited about our 2021 program and there are some very special announcements in the pipeline.

All the best

Claire and Lance
